Raised in rural Idaho as a first-generation student, Makenzie knows the challenges that Idaho communities face when it comes to access to education. After completing a B.S. in Biology from Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ as a TRIO McNair Scholar in 2021, Makenzie realized through a combination of her first-generation experiences and the Covid-19 pandemic that access to education, and specifically science, is limited in rural communities. This led Makenzie to obtaining a M.S. in Science and Technology Journalism from Texas A&M University, a degree used for transforming difficult concepts into accessible language. Makenzie returned to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ's TRIO programs as a TRIO ETS advisor in the summer of 2024 to continue working towards access to education and to give back to a community she loves.
